Bolton Council has applied to demolish the 280,000 sq ft former Crompton Place shopping centre, which it purchased in 2018 as part of a town centre regeneration masterplan. The council plans to redevelop the 3.8-acre site into a mixed-use scheme, which it hopes will revitalize the town centre. The demolition is subject to approval and is expected to be completed within a year, creating a new site for redevelopment.

The council will start searching for a development partner next month to transform the site, with the goal of having plans in place before the demolition begins. Cllr Nick Peel, the Bolton Council Leader, believes that the demolition of Crompton Place sends a clear signal that Bolton is serious about investment and regeneration, and that it will attract even more developers to the area.

The project has experienced setbacks in the past, including a missed attempt to develop the site with a joint venture in 2018. However, the council is committed to making the redevelopment a success, with advice from CBRE, Chapman Taylor, WSP, Civic Heritage, Appletons, and Oxford Archaeology.

The council believes that the Crompton Place redevelopment is a key component of its place-based regeneration strategy, and is seeking a best-in-class development partner to deliver a high-quality, inclusive, residential-led mixed-use scheme. The project has significant potential to transform the town centre, and the council is optimistic about its prospects for success.
