Scatec ASA, a solar energy company, has successfully started commercial operation of the first 60 MW of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana. This is Scatec’s first project in Botswana, and it will generate predictable revenues for the next 25 years through a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Botswana Power Corporation. The project is expected to complete the second phase, which is currently under construction, in early 2026. Scatec owns 100% of the project and is looking to reduce its long-term economic interest by inviting additional equity partners.

Scatec’s CEO, Terje Pilskog, expressed pride in achieving commercial operation of the first phase of the project within budget, emphasizing the company’s commitment to advancing renewable energy in the region. The company’s EVP of Sub-Saharan Africa, Alberto Gambacorta, noted that moving from development to construction and now to commercial operation has been a rewarding experience and that they are looking forward to completing the second phase in early 2026.

This project marks a significant milestone in Scatec’s efforts to expand its presence in the African market. The company has demonstrated its ability to deliver large-scale renewable energy projects, providing clean and reliable power to the region. With the successful deployment of the Mmadinare Solar Cluster, Scatec is poised to contribute to Botswana’s sustainable energy future, reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing its carbon footprint.
