Union Minister of Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that as of February 2025, India has installed a total of 214.68 GW of renewable energy capacity, which includes 102.57 GW of solar power, 48.59 GW of wind power, 11.45 GW of bio-power, and 52.07 GW of hydro power. The central government has allocated a total of Rs 30,045 crore for the development of renewable energy over the past five years.
The government has taken several initiatives to promote and accelerate the growth of renewable energy, including the issuance of bidding trajectories for the procurement of 50 GW/annum of renewable power by Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies, solar power, wind power, and other agencies. The government has also permitted foreign direct investment (FDI) up to 100% under the automatic route, waived inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power, and notified Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) trajectories until 2029-30.
To boost the consumption of renewable energy, the government has set up a Project Development Cell to attract and facilitate investments, issued standard bidding guidelines for tariff-based competitive bidding process, and launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission and Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme for offshore wind energy projects. The government has also implemented a scheme for setting up solar parks and ultra-mega solar power projects to provide land and transmission infrastructure for large-scale renewable energy projects.
The government has also prepared a transmission plan till 2030 to augment transmission infrastructure needed for the steep renewable energy trajectory. Furthermore, the Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy Through Green Energy Open Access) Rules, 2022, were notified in June 2022 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable green energy for all.
Overall, the government’s efforts aim to achieve a non-fossil power capacity of 500 GW by 2030, which would significantly reduce India’s carbon footprint and promote sustainable energy development.
