GEMS Education, a leading education institution in the UAE, has partnered with decarbonization specialist Positive Zero to implement a massive renewable energy project. The initiative will cover 23 GEMS schools in Dubai, introducing solar rooftops, carports, and bus parking areas to generate electricity.

The project will feature a combined capacity of nearly 12.7 megawatts peak, producing 21.25 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to powering approximately 2,000 homes for a year. The environmental impact is significant, with an estimated reduction of 14,276 metric tons of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to taking 3,300 cars off the road.

This agreement marks a major milestone in GEMS Education’s commitment to sustainability and climate literacy. The organization has incorporated climate literacy into its curriculum and has implemented various initiatives, including energy efficiency programs, waste management projects, and water conservation efforts.

The partnership with Positive Zero supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, enabling GEMS Education to transition to sustainable energy solutions without upfront investment. The agreement is a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a greener future.

GEMS Education’s Chief Executive Officer, Dino Varkey, emphasized the institution’s commitment to sustainability, stating that the agreement reflects their vision of integrating renewable energy on a large scale. Positive Zero’s CEO, David Auriau, highlighted the shared commitment to sustainability, noting that GEMS Education is leading the way in the education sector.

The initiative is expected to be fully operational by early 2026, making it the largest solar energy project in the UAE’s education sector. This partnership sets a new benchmark for sustainability in education, demonstrating GEMS Education’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting a sustainable future.
