The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has set a new benchmark with the launch of a 2 MW solar park project on its campus in Mihan-SEZ, the first of its kind in the city. The project, which is expected to be completed in six months, aims to make the IIM Nagpur a zero-emission campus. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the project, along with the inauguration of the IIM Nagpur’s first-of-its-kind golf academy.
The 130-acre campus has been targeted to become a net-zero campus, and the solar park is a significant step towards achieving this goal. The project is expected to significantly reduce the campus’s carbon footprint and operational costs. IIM Nagpur Director Bhimaraya Metri highlighted the importance of this initiative, saying it will provide a reliable and eco-friendly power source, marking a significant step towards achieving the net zero campus goal.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of energy transition, stating that by 2030, 52% of energy will come from renewable and non-conventional sources. He encouraged other institutions, such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur, to follow suit and set up solar parks of their own. AIIMS Nagpur has already approved a proposal to set up a 4 MW solar plant on its car parking canopy.
The golf academy, launched simultaneously, aims to provide avenues for the holistic growth of the student community, staff, executives visiting the campus, and all golf enthusiasts. The project is a significant step towards making IIM Nagpur a self-sustaining campus, both environmentally and economically. With the successful implementation of the solar park, IIM Nagpur is set to inspire other institutions to adopt similar initiatives, making a significant contribution to India’s energy transition goals.
