The Obrist Group, a carbon-neutral energy company in Germany, claims that they have found a solution to save internal combustion engines (ICEs) by modifying them to run on a compatible fuel, methanol. The company believes that switching a billion vehicles to battery-electric power is unrealistic and that modifying ICEs is a more practical approach. They claim that methanol can be produced using a patented process that removes more CO2 from the atmosphere than is released during combustion, making it a “CO2 vacuum cleaner”. The company has partnered with external auditors to verify their claims and has more than 200 patents in the field of sustainable energy technology. The CEO, Frank Obrist, believes that ICEs have advantages over battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) when considering the overall carbon footprint. Toyota is also investing in ICE technology, such as an ethanol-powered engine prototype. The use of green methanol could be a significant step in reducing emissions and meeting the UN’s climate goals by 2035.
