South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) has awarded 1,886 MW in offshore wind capacity across five projects. The projects include the 532 MW Anma Offshore Wind, 500 MW Taean Offshore Wind, 104 MW Yeonggwang Yawol, and 750 MW Firefly/Bandibuli floating wind farm. The projects were selected through a tender process that launched in October, with the goal of awarding 1.5 GW of offshore wind capacity. The largest project, the 750 MW Firefly/Bandibuli floating offshore wind farm, is part of a 6 GW cluster of floating projects. The project, developed by Equinor, is expected to start construction in 2026 and begin operations in 2029. The other projects are also expected to start construction and operations in the late 2020s. The awarding of these projects is part of South Korea’s efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
