Cobar Shire Council in New South Wales, Australia, has won an award for its innovative approach to reducing emissions. The council’s commitment to net-zero emissions led to the implementation of a solar array system on its water filtration plant, which now supplies 60% of the plant’s power needs. The project, which included building a large storage shed with solar panels on the roof, won the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards: Towards Net Zero Emissions. The council is also reusing 80% of its sewerage water for irrigation at the golf course and sporting fields. Additionally, a 20-kilowatt solar system at the pool helps to offset costs and extend the pool season. Looking ahead, the council is planning to partner with companies to develop wind farms in the area, which will help to supply local power and enable the growth of industries, such as mining. The council’s mayor, Jarrod Marsden, emphasized the importance of using renewable energy sources and the potential for progress, saying, “We don’t necessarily have high winds, but they are consistent… when you look at the numbers, they stack up fairly well.”
