The Japanese government is urging automakers to adapt their vehicles to run on biofuel by the early 2030s to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to have vehicles compatible with gasoline mixed with up to 20% biofuel, which is more effective in reducing CO2 emissions than conventional gasoline. To achieve this, the ministry plans to work with the private sector to formulate an action plan by next summer. Biofuel is made from plants that absorb carbon dioxide, but raising the biofuel concentration to 20% requires setting new standards to ensure fuel safety and carbon emissions impact. Securing a stable supply of biofuels, which Japan mainly imports, will also be a challenge. The ministry will request fuel suppliers to aim to supply fuel blended with up to 10% biofuel by 2030 and up to 20% by 2040.
