One year after world leaders vowed to shift away from fossil fuels, global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are projected to reach a record high of 37.4 billion metric tons in 2024, a 0.8% increase from 2023. This trend puts the world further away from its goal of stopping global warming. The increase is not uniform globally, with emissions likely to decline in the US and Europe, but offset by a surge in India and other regions. Despite advances in solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles, countries have continued to burn more oil, coal, and gas to meet growing energy demands. Experts had previously predicted global emissions could peak this decade, but the rapid spread of clean energy technologies has only partially satisfied the world’s energy needs.
