The marine industry is shifting towards alternative fuels and reducing emissions, requiring the development of new and improved marine lubricants. Lubmarine, a division of Total Energies, is working on creating lubricants for existing and future fuels, including biofuels, e-fuels, MeHO, and NH3. New engine designs are placing increased demands on lubricants, including higher temperatures and pressures, and exhaust gas recirculation and treatment. As a result, lubricants must have improved detergency, thermal stability, and oxidation resistance. Lubmarine is focusing on key areas of the combustion chamber, such as the ring pack and piston top, to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. The company has developed a “fuel economy lubricant” that can reduce engine friction and fuel consumption by up to 4%. This lubricant is applicable to various industries, including cruise, ferry, offshore, and powerplants.
