The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has made a historic decision to provide accident insurance coverage to its activists, making it the first political party in the country to do so. The agreement with United India Insurance and Pragmatic Insurance Broking was signed by IT and HRD Minister and TDP’s national general secretary, Nara Lokesh, on behalf of the party. This decision is a result of Lokesh’s efforts to ensure the welfare of TDP workers, who are the backbone of the party.
Under the agreement, TDP will pay a premium of Rs 42 crore for the first phase of insurance, which covers about one crore party activists, from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025. Each worker will receive an accident insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh. This move is part of the party’s efforts to provide financial assistance to its workers in case of unexpected incidents.
TDP has been focusing on the welfare of its workers, and under Lokesh’s leadership, the party has set up a legal department to provide legal assistance to workers who face torture and false cases. The party has also established a special cell to help workers who are injured in accidents and runs residential schools in Hyderabad and Krishna district to provide free education to children of deceased party workers.
The party’s membership drive has been successful, with the total membership reaching about 90 lakh, and is likely to cross the one-crore mark by the end of the deadline. Party supremo Chandrababu Naidu has agreed to extend the deadline for enrolment of members till January 15.
Lokesh stated that the decision to provide free accident insurance coverage is to extend financial assistance during unexpected incidents and that each party member is part of their family. Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar praised Lokesh’s efforts in ensuring the welfare of workers and said that this decision will be a golden chapter in the history of political parties.
