A 27-year-old interior designer from Mumbai was arrested by the South Cyber Team in Ambala in connection with the HDFC Life Insurance data hack case. The mastermind behind the hack is said to be based in Hong Kong. The accused reportedly accessed HDFC’s server under the guise of buying a policy, obtained a one-time password (OTP), and shared it with the hacker in Hong Kong. The data breach, which occurred between November 2024, resulted in the theft of sensitive customer information, including policy numbers, names, addresses, mobile numbers, and medical records. The hackers attempted to blackmail HDFC, sharing samples of the stolen data and threatening to release it online unless their financial demands were met. The cybercrime case was registered at the South Cyber Police Station under various sections of the IT Act and BNS Act. The suspect is alleged to have been in touch with HDFC officials through email and WhatsApp, using the email ID bsdqwasdg@gmail.com.
