The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Odisha has arrested Vinay Sonkar, former manager of Punjab National Bank’s (PNB) circle office in Balasore, in connection with a alleged Rs 1.23 crore fraud case. Sonkar was arrested from Burdwan in West Bengal and is being brought on transit remand to be produced in court. The case dates back to 2020, when Sonkar was manager at the PNB’s Balasore office. He allegedly issued directions to transfer Rs 1.23 crore to unauthorized accounts, causing huge losses to the bank. The funds were meant for loans under government schemes for poor people. The EOW has seized several incriminating documents, including personal files, forged letters, and bank statements. This is not Sonkar’s first fraud, as he was previously involved in a Rs 80 lakh scam at a different PNB branch. Further investigation is ongoing.
