The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has upheld the acquittal of four accused in the 2013 Axis Bank robbery case, involving a loot of ₹2,36,50,000. The court criticized the investigation officer for significant lapses and inadequate witnesses. The robbery occurred when a cash van transporting the money was accosted by men posing as police officers near Karanja, Wardha, and the robbers seized the cash at gunpoint. The investigation was based on the interrogation of Wasim Sheikh, the cash officer of the van, who was arrested on allegations of his involvement in the conspiracy. The defense counsel argued that the accused were falsely implicated due to irregularities in the investigation, including the failure to seize the van’s GPS system and lack of independent witnesses. The court found the investigation to be flawed, stating that the police may have concocted the case to stop public outcry. The court also raised doubts about the weights and measures used to load the money into the van. Consequently, the court acquitted the four accused due to lack of evidence, absence of independent witnesses, and defective investigation.
In a significant verdict, the High Court upheld the acquittal of four men accused of involvement in a bank heist in the city of Mumbai.
