IndiGo, a private airline, launched its first flight from Chennai to Penang on December 21, 2024, with 165 passengers on board. The 3.5-hour flight will operate daily, with connections to 38 cities across India. The flight will also be marketed as a Madurai-Penang service, with passengers having a through connection. The airline expects to cater to leisure traffic, visiting friends and relatives, traders, and religious tourists. Penang is a major electronics hub, and the airline will serve corporate traffic. Some passengers may also take a ferry service from Penang to Langkawi and connect to the airline’s Langkawi-Bengaluru flight. This is the airline’s latest addition to its air links between South India and Malaysia, which already includes flights from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, Bengaluru to Kuala Lumpur, and Bengaluru to Langkawi.
