In August 2024, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that August was the hottest in their 175-year record, highlighting the urgent need for action on climate change. In response, Newsweek released its annual sustainability ranking of the top 500 companies in the US, with only three from the dental industry making the list: Dentsply Sirona, Henry Schein, and Colgate-Palmolive Co.
The ranking is based on a comprehensive evaluation of over 25 criteria across four categories: greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, waste generation, and sustainability data disclosure and commitments. Dentsply Sirona and Henry Schein earned four-and-a-half-star ratings, while Colgate-Palmolive received four stars and has committed to reducing its environmental impact in line with the 1.5°C target set in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
The three companies have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability, with Dentsply Sirona showing improvement from last year’s four-star rating. The 2025 ranking is based on publicly available sustainability data as of July 31, 2024, and focuses on organizations that meet the European Union’s sustainability standards. The ranking aims to provide a helpful guide for consumers who wish to support businesses that are serious about sustainability and committed to a greener future.
Nancy Cooper, Newsweek’s global editor, emphasized that while climate change is a significant challenge, there is hope, and companies like Dentsply Sirona, Henry Schein, and Colgate-Palmolive Co. are leading the way. She encouraged consumers to support these and other businesses that prioritize sustainability, paving the way for a more environmentally friendly tomorrow.
