The US Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced that the US has won a dispute under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) regarding Mexico’s biotechnology measures concerning genetically engineered (GE) corn. The dispute settlement panel found that Mexico’s measures are not based on science and undermine market access that Mexico agreed to provide in the USMCA. The US government and the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) have long argued that the measures are detrimental to US agricultural exports and inconsistent with international standards. The panel’s ruling reaffirms the US’s concerns and underscores the importance of science-based trade policies that allow American farmers to compete fairly. The decision ensures that US producers and exporters will continue to have full and fair access to the Mexican market. Mexico has 45 days to comply with the panel’s findings.
