The Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, emphasized the crucial role of the academe in fostering biotechnology during the finale of the National Biotechnology Week (NBW) 2024 at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). Dr. De Vera highlighted the importance of biotechnology in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and healthcare. He stressed that the academe has a significant role to play in developing human resources and research capabilities in biotechnology. He also encouraged academic institutions to collaborate with industry partners to develop innovative solutions and products. The CHED Chairperson also emphasized the need for biotechnology education to be integrated into the curriculum of various degree programs. He also acknowledged the contributions of UPLB in biotechnology research and development, particularly in the areas of crop improvement, animal health, and environmental biotechnology.
