The Audi R8 is set to make a comeback in 2027 with a plug-in hybrid engine borrowed from Lamborghini. The new R8 will feature an aluminum spaceframe design, similar to the Lamborghini Temerario, with a 25% increase in torsional stiffness. The powertrain will be a 4-liter V8 engine producing 800 horsepower, with three electric motors and a 3.8kWh lithium-ion battery providing an additional 120 horsepower. This will result in a combined output of 920 horsepower. The electric-only range is expected to be around 9.65 kilometers, with the 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.7 seconds.
The new R8 will also feature a 4-wheel drive system, with two motors on the front axle and a third motor positioned between the V8 engine and dual-clutch transmission, serving as a starter generator and energy recovery system. The car will be available in both coupe and cabriolet versions, with production taking place at Audi’s Bollinger Hofe facility in Germany. A version with over 1,000 horsepower is also expected to launch in 2027, which could make it the most powerful and fastest road-going Audi ever, surpassing the current record-holder, the Audi e-tron GT RS. The new R8 will be part of Audi’s push towards electrification and is expected to be released internationally in 2027. Further details about the car’s features, pricing, and availability are yet to be announced.
