On New Year’s Eve, two teenagers in California allegedly stole a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro from the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay and took it on a high-speed joyride to Disneyland, reaching speeds of over 100 mph along the way. The stolen car was driven by a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from the same high school.
The boys allegedly broke into the Ritz-Carlton in the early morning hours and made off with the Camaro, which was reported stolen at around 4:30 am. Police were alerted to the theft and issued a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) for the stolen vehicle.
The boys apparently had a destination in mind, as they headed to Disneyland in Anaheim, a 35-mile drive that took them through the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they reportedly reached speeds of over 100 mph. The thrills of the highway heist were short-lived, as California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were hot on their heels, responding to a report of a speeding Camaro.
After a high-speed chase, the boys were finally pulled over and arrested near the junction of Interstate 5 and Highway 56. The stolen car was recovered, and the teenagers were taken into custody and booked at the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.
The Ritz-Carlton’s general manager praised the swift response of the authorities, stating, “Our team worked closely with the authorities to help track down the stolen vehicle and apprehend the individuals responsible.” The Camaro’s owner, a local resident, was relieved to have their vehicle back, expressing gratitude to the police for their swift action.
This brazen heist has sparked a mix of amusement and alarm, with many marveling at the daring of the youngsters but also expressing concern for the dangers of and potential consequences of their actions. As the boys face charges, it remains to be seen how they will be punished for their high-stakes joyride.
