Sella Controls has won a major contract to refurbish the traction power systems on the Tyne and Wear Metro, utilizing Mitsubishi Electric Automation Systems hardware. The contract involves the refurbishment of 47 substations on the Metro, using Mitsubishi Electric’s Tracklink RTU system, which was developed in collaboration with Sella Controls over the past decade. Tracklink RTU features Mitsubishi Electric i-QR PLCs and panel-mounted GOT HMIs, providing a flexible and cost-effective solution for electrical substation automation. The system has already been used on mainline rail systems and has been granted final certification by Network Rail. The Tyne and Wear Metro win is the first time the system has been specified for an urban metro system. Both Mitsubishi Electric and Sella Controls have strong credentials in the rail sector, with a history of working on projects such as HS1 tunnel ventilation and train movement systems on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. The companies are confident that Tracklink RTU will bring a new era of efficiency and reliability to the Tyne and Wear Metro.
