In Germany, thousands of new cars, mostly electric, have flooded the parking lots of logistics company CAT in Essen due to weak demand. The vehicles, worth at least 300 million euros, have been accumulating for over a year. Officials at CAT say they have never seen anything like this before. The reason for the overcrowding is a lack of demand, with only 2.3 million new cars registered between January and October, a 0.4% drop from last year. Brands like Volkswagen and Audi are particularly affected, with registrations dropping by 17.9% and 30%, respectively. This has led to car manufacturers like Volkswagen closing factories, cutting bonuses and wages, and workers preparing to strike. The situation is advantageous for CAT, as car manufacturers pay for parking spaces.
