BYD, a Chinese automaker, is reportedly exploring the development of humanoid robots. The company has restructured its 15th business unit into two groups, with some staff focused on artificial intelligence (AI) research at its future lab. The lab has been working on industrial robots for automated guided vehicles and other types of robots. BYD has posted job openings for fresh graduates with a master’s or PhD in AI, including research roles related to humanoid robots, bipedal robots, and quadrupedal mechanical dogs. The company is already experimenting with humanoid robots at its vehicle assembly plants, similar to other Chinese automakers Nio and Xpeng. Additionally, Tesla is also developing its Optimus humanoid robot and testing it at its gigafactories. BYD’s foray into humanoid robots is part of its efforts to expand its research and development in AI and robotics.
