Mitsubishi is a Japanese automaker that has a rich history dating back to 1870. While best known for its rally racing and sporty sedans and coupes, the company has also dabbled in the luxury market. In the 1960s, Mitsubishi released the Debonair, which served as its flagship sedan for 35 years. To replace it, Mitsubishi introduced the Proudia and Dignity in 1999, featuring a new V8 engine, the 8A80, which was jointly developed with Hyundai. The engine was used in only three cars and was known for its smoothness and good fuel economy. However, the premium fuel required was a issue in South Korea, where the Hyundai Equus struggled with fuel quality. The Proudia/Dignity was discontinued in 2001 after only three years, with a total production run of 1,286 units. Today, Mitsubishi’s focus is on affordable vehicles, but it’s worth noting that the company has a heritage to lean back on and potentially create new products that rival other luxury brands.
