Chinese automaker BYD is set to enter the pickup market with the launch of the “Shark” model, which will be manufactured at the Camaçari plant in Bahia, Brazil. The new model will be a hybrid pickup, with a design similar to the Fiat Strada, and will be available in single and double cab versions. The powertrain is expected to be based on the 1.5 DM-i Atkinson cycle engine, which is already used in other BYD models. The Shark will likely be available in both hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. This marks a new entry into the market, which will increase competition for the popular Fiat Strada. BYD’s decision to produce the Shark in Brazil suggests an intention to establish a long-term presence in the market and capitalize on the country’s growing demand for pickup trucks.
