The Goa Motorcycle Taxi Rider’s Association has launched a pilot scheme to promote the use of electric bikes among its members. The scheme, which is expected to be launched in December, offers 50% financing for the first 500 members who opt for electric bikes. Each electric bike is estimated to cost around Rs 80,000, and the association has sought funding through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to cover half of the expenses.
The scheme is open to all registered members of the association, but the primary target is to attract new and young riders to the industry. There are currently at least 2,000 pilots in Goa, and the association hopes that this scheme will encourage fresh talent to join the profession. The association will assist new members in obtaining the necessary permits to operate as motorcycle pilots in Goa.
The existing electric vehicles (EVs) in the market are not suitable for use as motorcycle taxis due to their high seats and limited battery life. To address this issue, the association is getting a customized bike manufactured that suits the needs of the pilots. The customized bike will have a lower seat and a longer-lasting battery, making it ideal for use as a motorcycle taxi.
As part of the scheme, plans are also underway to install EV charging stations at all pilot taxi stands across Goa. This will ensure that the electric bikes can be easily charged and operated throughout the day. The servicing and maintenance of the vehicles will be taken care of by the individual pilots.
The association will hold a meeting on Saturday to discuss the execution of the scheme in detail. The pilot scheme is part of the association’s CSR activities, and it aims to promote the use of eco-friendly transportation in Goa. By offering affordable financing options and customized bikes, the association hopes to encourage its members to switch to electric vehicles and reduce their carbon footprint.
