ARTIST’S COMMENT: “The Lady of November bears the Chrysanthemum and dons the stone of Topaz. The Chrysanthemum represents cheerfulness and the Topaz will bring her strength and wisdom. She ushers in a time of fading light and remembrance.” This is a very personal painting for me in this series, as this is my own birth month and I feel very connected with her themes of remembrance of the dead. Every year in Mexico, the monarch butterflies migrate around the time of the Day of the Dead, which has led to the local belief that these are the spirits of the returning deceased there to visit there loved ones every year. She also channels the Aztec goddess of the dead, Mictēcacihuātl, who is said in one story to have been a sacrifice, herself, before she held dominion over the realm of the dead. This story stuck with me as I painted this piece. The Lady of November acts as a beacon for the dead, guiding them to their loved ones who wait for their promised reunion to celebrate the good memories they hope to keep alive. “Lady of November” was originally rendered in watercolor and ink and is part of a birthstone series of paintings.
