Henna also known as hina, the henna tree (mignonette tree) is a flowering plant, the leaves of this plant is made in the form of powder and used as henna mehndi. The English name “henna” comes from the Arabic. The paste can be applied with many traditional and innovative tools, a cone shaped paper or syringe or fingers. After applying the paste a light orange colour may be observed within few minutes, the longer hours the mehndi paste is left on the palms or hands, the darker the colour will be so it is left for several hours that’s the reason people usually apply it during night times. Henna colours are orange soon after application, but it gets darker over the following 1-2 days to a reddish brown. To prevent it from drying or falling off the skin, the paste is often dabbed with a sugar/lemon mix liquid over the dried paste, or simply adding some sugar liquid to the paste. Some believe it increases the colour of the mehndi designs. After sometime the dried paste is simply removed or washed away.
