The Colgate University women’s hockey team defeated the Clarkson University Golden Knights 5-2 in an ECAC Hockey matchup on Saturday. The Golden Knights, ranked 11th nationally, had their six-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 13-7-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the ECAC. Colgate, also ranked in the top 15, improved to 12-10-1 and 7-4-1.<\/p>\n
The game started with Clarkson dominating, outshooting Colgate 11-1 in the first 10 minutes. However, it was Colgate that scored the first goal on a fluke play, as a shot rebounded off a Clarkson defender’s skate and into the net. Clarkson tied the game early in the second period on a goal by Sara Manness, and later took a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal by Sena Catterall. <\/p>\n
Colgate responded with a power-play goal of their own to tie the game 2-2. In the third period, Colgate took control, scoring three unanswered goals, including two on the power play and an empty-netter. Elyssa Biederman scored the go-ahead goal for Colgate, and Sara Stewart added a power-play goal to make it 4-2. <\/p>\n
Colgate sealed the win with an empty-net goal with just over a minute left. Despite being outshot 54-52, Colgate’s goaltender Brooke Davis made 33 saves to earn the win. Clarkson’s Holly Gruber made 23 saves in the loss. Both teams finished 2-for-5 on the power play, and Clarkson won 42 faceoffs to Colgate’s 27. The Golden Knights will look to bounce back next weekend when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College at Cheel Arena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
