The Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL) has initiated exploratory drilling operations at the Khetri Copper Complex tailing pond in collaboration with Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL). The primary objective of this operation is to assess the presence of critical minerals within the mine tailings. The drilling work was launched in the presence of officials from Hindustan Copper and is being overseen by MECL’s Mundi Project.

This initiative marks a significant step towards evaluating secondary mineral resources using scientific methods. The MECL plans to undertake similar assessment studies at the Malanjkhand Copper Project, expanding the scope of exploration beyond conventional mineral deposits. The program highlights MECL’s growing role in diversified exploration activities, particularly in the assessment of mine tailings for critical and strategic minerals.

The assessment of mine tailings is crucial for supporting informed and sustainable decision-making in mineral resource utilization. This aligns with India’s broader critical minerals strategy, which aims to identify and extract valuable minerals from secondary sources. By exploring mine tailings, MECL can help reduce waste, minimize environmental impact, and unlock new economic opportunities.

The collaboration between MECL and HCL demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable mineral development and reducing dependence on primary mineral resources. The use of scientific methods and technology will enable the identification of critical minerals, such as copper, gold, and other strategic minerals, which are essential for various industries, including energy, electronics, and construction.

The success of this project can have significant implications for India’s mineral sector, enabling the country to reduce its reliance on imports and promote domestic production of critical minerals. Furthermore, the assessment of mine tailings can also help in reducing the environmental impact of mining activities, as it can lead to the recovery of valuable minerals from waste materials. Overall, the MECL’s initiative is a step towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to mineral exploration and development in India.
