Vedanta’s Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) is ramping up its production of aluminium wire rods to meet growing domestic demand driven by India’s rapid digital infrastructure development. The company aims to increase its overall aluminium production to 1 million tonnes per year, with a focus on high-quality wire rods that cater to critical applications in sectors such as telecom, power, and industrial manufacturing. In the financial year 2025, BALCO manufactured over 200,000 tonnes of aluminium wire rods, all of which were supplied to domestic markets, with major demand coming from Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.

BALCO’s wire rods are certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and are known for their conductivity, corrosion resistance, and durability, making them essential for signal transmission, power infrastructure, and fibre optic networks. The company was the first in the country to earn BIS 5484 certification for alloy wire rods, demonstrating its commitment to quality and innovation. With several expansion initiatives nearing completion, BALCO is set to nearly double its aluminium production capacity from 0.57 to 1 million tonnes annually.

According to Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, aluminium wire rods play a crucial role in building India’s digital and energy infrastructure. The company’s expanded capacity will ensure a reliable supply of high-performance materials, catering to the growing demand from the telecom and power sectors. Beyond these sectors, BALCO’s wire rods are also used in the automotive, electrical equipment, and steel sectors, contributing to India’s broader industrial growth.

As a leader in downstream aluminium products, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25, accounting for over half of the nation’s total output. The company is committed to sustainable and future-ready metal solutions, with integrated operations that include aluminium smelters, an alumina refinery, and power plants located across India. With its strong focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability, Vedanta Aluminium is well-positioned to support India’s growing demand for aluminium and contribute to the country’s industrial growth and development.
