Austria-based technology group ANDRITZ has secured a significant order from Adani Green Energy for the 1,800 MW Gandikota pumped storage project in Andhra Pradesh, India. The order includes the supply of reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and related electromechanical equipment. This is the third contract awarded to ANDRITZ by Adani Green, following previous orders for the 1,500 MW Tarali project and the 500 MW Chitravathi project.
The Gandikota project will be executed using ANDRITZ’s manufacturing facilities in India, supported by its global network. The company will be responsible for the design, manufacture, installation, testing, and commissioning of the pumped storage units and associated auxiliaries. The project is expected to be completed within the next six years.
Adani Green has an installed capacity of 500 MW of pumped storage projects and plans to expand its portfolio to over 5 GW by 2030. The company has also received a letter of award for the 1,250 MW Panaura pumped storage project in Uttar Pradesh. To encourage the development of pumped storage projects, the Forum of Regulators has recommended exempting electricity duty and cess on input energy for pumping, which would help reduce costs.
India has made significant additions to its pumped storage capacity, with recent projects including THDC’s Tehri pumped storage project and Greenko’s Pinnapuram hydro power project. According to data from the Central Electricity Authority and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India added 1,200 MW of pumped hydro capacity in the second quarter of 2025. The Gandikota project is a significant addition to India’s renewable energy portfolio and will help support the country’s goal of expanding its clean energy capacity.
The order from Adani Green Energy is a significant milestone for ANDRITZ, demonstrating the company’s expertise in providing advanced technology solutions for the renewable energy sector. The project will not only contribute to India’s renewable energy goals but also support the country’s economic growth and development. With its global network and manufacturing facilities in India, ANDRITZ is well-positioned to support the growth of the renewable energy sector in India and beyond.
