Tata Steel has achieved a significant milestone with the rollout of the first batch of galvanised coils from its newly commissioned Continuous Galvanising Line-1 (CGL-1) at the Cold Rolling Mill complex in Kalinganagar, Odisha. The CGL-1 is equipped with advanced features such as a third-generation air-knife and oxidation chamber, enabling the production of high-quality coated steel, including Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) for the automotive and appliances sectors.
The new facility is designed to meet the stringent quality needs of customers, offering superior surface finish, formability, and corrosion resistance. According to Prabhat Kumar, VP Marketing & Sales (Flat Products) at Tata Steel, this facility is tailored to cater to the specific requirements of customers. The CGL-1 is an integral part of the Phase II expansion at Kalinganagar, which has increased the total capacity at the site from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA.
The Phase II expansion has been made possible with a total investment of ₹27,000 crore, which also includes the development of other facilities such as the Pellet Plant and Coke Plant. The Cold Rolling Mill complex is a critical component of the expansion, and the CGL-1 is a key part of this complex. The production of high-quality coated steel from the CGL-1 is expected to cater to the growing demands of the automotive and appliances sectors, which require advanced steel products with superior properties.
The rollout of the first batch of galvanised coils from the CGL-1 marks a significant achievement for Tata Steel, demonstrating its commitment to investing in state-of-the-art technology and expanding its production capacity to meet the evolving needs of its customers. With this development, Tata Steel is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the Indian steel industry and cater to the growing demands of the domestic and international markets.
