HCLTech, a leading IT service provider, has been working with Commonwealth Bank (CBA) to migrate its data platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The project, one of the largest migrations in the southern hemisphere, involved moving over 61,000 data pipelines to the cloud. HCLTech’s team, led by Executive Vice President and Head of Business Unit, Eland, used a tailored approach to complete the project within a tight six-month deadline.

The project’s success was due in part to the close collaboration between HCLTech, CBA, and AWS. Eland emphasized the importance of having a shared goal and a “One Team One Dream” approach to achieve the ambitious target deadline. The partnership allowed for immediate support and feedback, which was crucial in meeting the tight timeline.

The migration project is part of CBA’s larger strategy to federate its data and make it more accessible to the business and data producers. Eland noted that data has traditionally been centralized, but organizations now want to get it into the hands of the business and data producers. The first step is to move to the cloud, followed by publishing data in the AWS marketplace.

The project also highlighted the importance of team composition and the need for diverse perspectives. Eland noted that teams will need to evolve to include a mix of humans and agents, such as AI and automation tools. HCLTech is actively seeking individuals with diverse backgrounds, including business expertise, to bring greater empathy and varied perspectives into their teams.

Eland emphasized that the ability to work effectively with data is critical for organizations with ambitious AI plans. While innovative concepts are essential, everything ultimately hinges on the ability to utilize data effectively. The project with CBA demonstrates HCLTech’s ability to bring together the right tools and expertise to support large-scale data migrations and AI initiatives.

The success of the project has set a precedent for future collaborations between HCLTech, CBA, and AWS. Eland noted that the partnership has been instrumental in facilitating the success of the project, and that the same approach can be applied to other large-scale projects. The project has also highlighted the importance of teamwork, diversity, and collaboration in achieving ambitious goals in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.
