In a significant boost to India’s indigenous defense capabilities, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and L&T Defence are set to jointly develop the next-generation Pinaka Mk-III multi-barrel rocket launcher system in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Indian Army is expected to receive the new system soon, with user trials scheduled to begin by the end of 2025. The Pinaka Mk-III will bring enhanced range, accuracy, and firepower to India’s artillery regiments.
The Indian Army has planned to induct 22 Pinaka regiments in the coming years, making it one of the largest artillery modernization programs currently underway. Furthermore, development work on Pinaka Mk-IV is expected to commence in 2027-28, which will push the envelope on next-generation artillery rocket systems with improved range and smart capabilities.
The Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) is an indigenous rocket artillery system designed and developed by the DRDO. It has emerged as a powerful example of India’s deterrence capability and defense manufacturing prowess. The system strengthens India’s artillery capabilities and signifies a major milestone in reducing dependency on foreign defense equipment. The Pinaka system is produced by a consortium of top Indian defense manufacturers, including Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro, showcasing successful public-private collaboration.
India’s domestic industry has achieved the capacity to manufacture over 5,000 Pinaka rockets annually, a crucial advantage in sustaining extended military operations without external support. The Pinaka system has also generated interest from other nations, including France, and has already secured exports to Armenia. This global attention emphasizes the increasing recognition of India’s defense manufacturing quality and the competitive performance of Indian-made military technology on the world stage.
The development of the Pinaka Mk-III and the planned induction of 22 regiments are significant steps towards enhancing India’s artillery capabilities. The collaboration between BDL, L&T Defence, and DRDO demonstrates the country’s commitment to indigenous defense production and reducing dependence on foreign equipment. With the Pinaka system, India has established itself as a reliable defense exporter, and its defense manufacturing industry is expected to continue to grow and play a significant role in the global market.
