Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has made history by becoming the world’s first renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) to achieve water positivity across its entire operational portfolio of over 14GW capacity. This milestone was achieved a year ahead of the company’s target of FY26, setting a new standard for sustainability in the industry. AGEL is the first and only company among the global top-10 renewable energy companies to achieve this feat.

The company’s water positivity was certified by Intertek, a global assurance firm, after conducting comprehensive audits and assessments of AGEL’s water accounting data across 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation sites. This certification is a testament to AGEL’s commitment to adopting practices that not only conserve water but also increase water availability in the surroundings.

Being water positive means that AGEL replenishes more fresh water to nature than it consumes in its operations. The company has achieved this through a framework that involves preserving water, optimizing its consumption, and contributing to its replenishment. This is particularly significant given that the majority of AGEL’s solar and wind plants are located in water-scarce regions, where survival is a challenge and water is a luxury.

AGEL’s achievement is all the more remarkable considering the harsh terrain in which its plants are located, including the arid regions of the Thar desert and the barren expanses of Khavda in Gujarat. The company’s water positivity has emerged as an oasis of hope and innovation, demonstrating that even in the most challenging environments, sustainability is possible. According to an AGEL spokesperson, “We don’t just generate green energy. We build it the greenest way possible.” With this achievement, AGEL has set a new benchmark for the renewable energy industry, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
