The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has introduced changes to the H-1B visa program under the Trump administration, which allows US employers to hire foreign workers with specialized skills. According to USCIS data, Indian-origin tech companies received a significant number of H-1B visas, with Indian companies like Infosys, TCS, and Wipro among the top recipients.

In 2024, Indian-origin companies received 24,766 out of 130,000 H-1B visas, with Infosys receiving 8,140 visas, TCS receiving 5,274, and Wipro receiving 1,634. However, top companies by H-1B visa approvals include Jeff Bezos-led Amazon, with 9,265 approvals, and other US tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Apple.

The data from the USCIS portal shows that there were 130,000 H-1B visas approved from April to September 2024. The “Beneficiaries Approved” count includes the number of unique individuals who have received approval to work in the US under the H-1B program, which can include new hires or extensions for existing workers. The data, however, does not account for multiple petitions filed for the same beneficiary by different employers or whether they have actually started working in the US.

Pew Research Center reported that 73% of H-1B workers whose applications were approved in FY 2023 were born in India, based on a FOIA request to USCIS. This data covers approvals from FY 2000 to FY 2023. The H-1B program has been a contentious issue, with debates over its impact on the US labor market and benefits to foreign workers. As the US economy continues to navigate changes to immigration policies, the H-1B program remains a crucial route for foreign workers to bring their skills to the US.
