Residents of Sambalpur are facing sudden power cuts and disconnections due to unpaid electricity bills. The issue is exacerbated by the inefficiency of the Western Electricity Supply Company (WESCO), which has led to a buildup of outstanding bills over the years. Tata Power, the new electricity distribution company, is now cracking down on consumers to clear their debts, using aggressive tactics such as surprise home visits from recovery agents.
The lack of a clear payment scheme has left many consumers struggling to clear their bills, with some being forced to pay tens of thousands of rupees overnight. The sudden power cuts in rural areas, including Jujumura, Padiabahal, Hatibari, and Sindurpank, have added to the frustration of residents.
Dr. Rajaram Sarangi, general secretary of the Sambalpur District Electricity Consumers’ Association, has criticized the aggressive tactics used by recovery agents and has called for a more humane approach, including partial payment options and prior notice before visits. He also emphasized the need for Tata Power to address the underlying issue of pending bills and provide clear solutions for consumers.
In response, Praveen Verma, CEO of TPWODL, emphasized the importance of timely bill payments to avoid power cuts and assured minimal disruptions. However, consumers are demanding more effective solutions to their problems and better communication from Tata Power.
The situation is particularly critical in the summer season, when electricity is a vital necessity. Both consumers and Tata Power must work together to find a sustainable solution to this pressing issue, including introducing more accessible payment options, improving communication, and ensuring minimal power cuts.
