Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division in Ramgarh district has undertaken a decarbonization program, replacing diesel vehicles with electric ones to reduce carbon emissions and operational costs. The initiative has been a success, with a reduction of 127 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the initial phase. The program started with the introduction of 11 EVs, which led to a 43-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions. This success was followed by the introduction of an additional 25 EVs, bringing the total number of EVs in operation to 36.
The program has also included the establishment of fast charging stations at various work locations for efficient vehicle recharging. General Manager of West Bokaro Division, Anurag Dixit, has stated that the transition to electric vehicles is a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices, as it not only reduces CO2 emissions but also achieves substantial cost savings.
Tata Steel is also exploring other decarbonization options, including trials for LNG-based dual fuel technology in dump trucks. The company is also planning to replicate this initiative in other mines, including Jharia and Noamundi in Dhanbad and West Singhbhum districts. This move is a step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to mining, and could potentially be a game-changer for the industry as a whole. Overall, Tata Steel’s decarbonization program is a positive step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable mining practices.
