The Bombay High Court has directed Adani Cementation Limited to provide a detailed explanation of the public interest served by its proposed jetty project, which involves cutting approximately 158 mangrove trees in a reserved forest area. The project, valued at ₹172 crores, aims to establish a berthing jetty, conveyor corridor, and approach road to handle an annual traffic load of 5 million tonnes of cement, fly ash, slag, clinker, and coal. The project has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, but environmental concerns have been raised by the Bombay Environmental Action Group. The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 25, 2025, and has ordered Adani Cementation Limited to submit an affidavit within two weeks detailing the public interest served by the project and the terms of the jetty’s free usage. The court is seeking to ensure that the destruction of mangroves is justified with clear public benefits.
Hindustan Times demands that Adani’s subsidiary provide explanation for clearing 172 crore-rupee project’s mangrove clearance for its proposed jetty development in Mumbai.
