Tata Steel has operationalized its first all-women shift at its Noamundi iron mine in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district, making it a historic initiative in the country. The shift is a significant milestone in the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts, which began with the launch of its “Women@Mines” program in 2019. The program aimed to recruit and train women to operate heavy earth-moving machinery and participate in the mining ecosystem. The 24 selected women operators underwent extensive training, including technical and operational skills, simulator sessions, safety protocols, and physical fitness before joining the workforce in April 2022. The initiative is a testament to the resilience and capability of women breaking stereotypes and is seen as a landmark achievement for the Indian mining industry. The company plans to create more opportunities for women, especially in the mining ecosystem, and continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating an equitable workplace.
