Bosch is planning to invest up to $1.9 billion to transform its Roseville, US, site into a facility that produces and tests silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. The investment will enable the production of SiC chips, which are used in battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, to provide affordable electromobility options for consumers. The company aims to start producing chips on 200-millimeter wafers based on its SiC technology in 2026. The existing workforce, which has 40 years of experience in semiconductor design and production, will not be affected by the transformation, with nearly all associates retained. The company chose to transform the existing fab rather than building a new one, citing the talent and expertise of the local workforce as a major factor. This investment supports Bosch’s strategic plan to reinforce its semiconductor portfolio and support local customers.
